Join Rockway Institute
in the fight against the
distortion of science by
anti-LGBT groups!

Your support will allow Rockway to continue to fight the misuse of science by right-wing groups in the public discussion of LGBT issues. Funds are needed to continue the Scientific Accuracy in the News project that increases awareness of accurate research about same-sex marriage and parenting, so-called ex-gay therapies, transgender issues and treatment of young
people questioning their sexual orientation.

Funds are also needed to support new research that fills in the gaps in existing knowledge about gay male parenting, the psychological impact of marriage exclusion, and the resilience of LGBT youth. Rockway also seeks funding for a study of a new LGBT curriculum in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Become a part of this effort by making your tax-deductible donation to Rockway Institute today!

Your gift can double! Our university has designated $100,000 of a matching gift for use by the Rockway Institute in increments of $1,000. This means that all gifts to the Rockway Institute of $1,000 or more will be matched with these funds up to $100,000 until they run out or expire. Your timely response will double the impact of your gift to support Rockway Institute's work!

Your employer may match your gift! Many companies encourage donations by matching gifts. Check to see if your employer will double your support of Rockway Institute.

Visit our website donation page, or contact Executive Director Robert-Jay Green, PhD, (rockway@alliant.edu) for information about how you can advance the fight against the misuse of science.

Mission Statement

The nonpartisan Rockway Institute brings together scientific research and professional expertise to counter antigay prejudice and inform public policies affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. The Institute's view is that public opinion, policies, and programs should be shaped by the facts about LGBT lives, not by political ideology.

A primary goal is to organize the most knowledgeable social scientists, mental health professionals, and physicians in the United States to provide accurate information about LGBT issues to the media, legislatures, and courts. The Institute also conducts targeted research projects to address the nation's most pressing LGBT public policy questions.

Focus of the Institute's Activities

To carry out these programs, the Institute draws on the expertise of its 19-member National Advisory Board, 13 core faculty members at Alliant International University (the largest nonprofit training institution for professional psychologists in the U.S.), and a large group of professionals located throughout the country. We deploy these experts to provide accurate information to the media, legislatures, and the courts. More generally, the Institute serves as a resource for other organizations that need experts and research information about LGBT issues in their public education and advocacy activities.

Executive Director's Message

Welcome to the first issue of The Rockway Report, bringing you the latest scientific findings on LGBT issues in a lively format and keeping you up-to-date about the work of the Rockway Institute.

In this, our first full year of operation, we've accomplished much more than we anticipated. With the help of a $50,000 grant from the Gill Foundation, we organized and provided media trainings for over 100 social scientists, mental health professionals, and physicians throughout the U.S. Many of these professionals are now linked as experts on our website and are available to speak to print and broadcast media reporters. See a list of Rockway Experts.

We've designed three new research projects that will address major LGBT public policy issues:

  • The first-ever quantitative, long-term study of gay male parents and their young children conceived via surrogacy (approximately 300 families).
  • A study of the impact of a LGBT-affirmative health science curriculum on 60,000 ethnically-diverse ninth graders in the LA Unified School District.
  • An internet-based study of the psychological and social impact of marriage exclusion/inclusion on same-sex couples throughout the U.S.

Each of these studies is being designed with an eye toward answering the critical questions that state and federal legislators and courts are facing every day. Science informing LGBT public policy is our mission, and we feel blessed with our successes this year. We welcome your questions and suggestions, and we hope you will support our work and help us meet our $100,000 challenge grant (see sidebar at left).

Opinion Pieces

Governor Richardson: The only choice is whether to be out
by Robert-Jay Green, PhD.
The audience gasped when New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson said sexual orientation was choice during last week's televised forum with Democratic presidential candidates on gay issues. The questioner, performer Melissa Etheridge, quickly tried to rescue Richardson, asking if he understood the question. "Well, I'm not a scientist," he said. "I don't see this as an issue of science or definition.  (more)

Welcome Samuel David Cheney!
by Robert-Jay Green, PhD
Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne are the proud grandparents of a new baby boy. Their daughter Mary gave birth to Samuel David Cheney at a Washington D.C. area hospital May 23, 2007. Baby Samuel has been the recipient of much more attention than his family's love. From first word that Mary and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, were to become parents, their pregnancy created controversy. (more)

Fostering the Truth about Lesbian and Gay Adoption
by Robert-Jay Green, PhD
When big-money conservative advocacy meets high-speed journalism, the truth is sometimes unwittingly sacrificed. In an article from The Economist, the annual operating budget of Focus on the Family was recently estimated as $150 million. Well-funded right-wing groups deceive the media on a regular basis with their authoritative pronouncements and scientific-sounding names like Family Research Council and Family Research
Institute. (more)
