This Master's degree in Organizational Behavior will immerse you in a challenging educational environment that has been developed to maximize both personal and career growth, emphasizing and focusing on improving the effectiveness of organizations. The program, founded in 1989 and now part of the Organizational Psychology Division of the Marshall Goldsmith School of Managment, is dedicated to providing graduate degrees for working professionals who would benefit from a part-time, educational program with great flexibility.

The MAOB on the Fresno Campus of Alliant International University curriculum emphasizes skill-based learning and the immediate application of knowledge in the workplace. Adult learners are encouraged to bring work and organizational challenges to their study through an interactive, educational environment based on the scholar-practitioner model, that offers opportunities for collaboration, participation, and applied problem solving.

The goal of the MAOB program is to broaden and strengthen the role of managers, higher education faculty and administrators, trainers, public policy makers, and professionals in human resources, health care, and other fields, from both profit and non-profit organizations, in addressing the current needs of workplace issues. We are also committed to sensitizing leaders, employees, and organizations to the needs and differences of a culturally diverse and increasingly global workforce.

Overview of the Curriculum

The MAOB curriculum is strongly grounded in the literature and research of management and organizational behavior and is directly linked to the issues and problems that business leaders face on a daily basis. The curriculum draws from a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, philosophy, social psychology, management and leadership, global studies, and communication sciences. The scholar-practitioner model requires students to integrate theory, research, and practice. Students develop skills in diagnosing work related problems, designing and implementing solutions, and evaluating the effectiveness of these activities. "The three things that I appreciated most about the MAOB program would be 1) the program schedule, which was tailored to the working person, 2) the instructors, whose hands-on experience was a big plus, and 3) the other students, from whom I learned a great deal. The program was wonderful."

range of expertise in the field. The core faculty is augmented by carefully selected adjunct faculty, who are working professionals with wide and varied experience in management, training, employee, team building, and organization development activities. The MAOB program provides a learning environment where students and faculty interact together and value the real world experiences that working professionals bring to the classroom. As noted during a recent visit by the university’s accrediting body, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), “. . . the masters program has developed an enthusiastic and committed faculty skilled in teaching adult learners. There is a 98% graduation rate that reflects the dedication to responding to the needs of the adult student by providing program quality as well as flexibility. Graduates are providing visibility for the institution with their commitment to their community and have been successful in utilizing their degrees in teaching, consulting, training, and job promotions.”

The MAOB degree requires a total of 34 semester units offered over a 16-month period. The program will be delivered in an intensive weekend format (Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday) once each month with the exception of September and May when courses will be held twice during the month. During the month of August, students will attend class at our Mexico City Campus for one week. In addition to class time, included in the work-study experience will be informative tours to Mexican organizations and businesses, cultural studies, and an opportunity for beginning conversational Spanish.

Unique Educational Location

Fresno, located in the beautiful San Joaquin Valley, is one of the few places with a true Mediterranean climate. The Valley’s ethnic diversity, which is demographically ahead of the state and national curve in its population diversity, rivals that of big cities. Fresno is home for many universities; government and social service agencies; and medical, manufacturing and agriculture industries.

Empowering Educational Program Format

The experiential, cohort nature of the program fosters a collaborative learning atmosphere in the context of students’ personal and professional lives, supporting the belief that education is a lifelong process that engages the student as a whole person. The program is based on, and dedicated to, educating students on the principles of adult learning—collaboration, participation, and applied problem solving. Small group and cohort relationships are sustained by the integration of traditional face-to-face learning, online distance technology, independent study, guest lecturers, consulting project experiences, provided in an interactive, educational environment that offers students opportunities for networking within, and impacting the communities in which they live and work.
